Ethics and Punishments of Tennis Players During Matches

Before tournament officials, tournament officials should know if the attitude regulations are legalized or not. Generally, for each legal TDP (Recognized Tournament Pelti) tournament, ITF (International Tennis Federation) must apply attitude regulations to regulate the course of each match so that the match runs smoothly. Attitude regulations apply to tournament officials and players/participants.

PLAYER/PARTICIPANT ETHICS CODE

Generally, referees must apply ethical regulations as soon as possible when a player violates. Here are the attitude regulations for players:

1. Dress and Equipment (Dress and Equipment)

In principle, players must wear clothes designed for tennis tournaments, even a long-sleeved shirt if designed for tennis tournaments, a player is allowed to wear it. For Junior Doubles, players must wear clothes with the same color, either pants or t-shirt, but for senior doubles for men can wear similar or almost the same color, but for senior doubles women can wear different colors or not.

2. Unreasonable Delay

According to tennis regulations, the game must continue, if a player exceeds 20 seconds (between points), or in the following conditions:

  • Refusing to play
  • Losing physical condition
  • After injury treatment

If the player violates these regulations, the penalty is a time violation: "warning, point, point, point, etc."

3. Receiving and Giving Instructions (Coaching and Coaches)

Players are not allowed to receive instructions during the match (except for doubles during the change of place).

4. Obscene words that can be heard (Audible Obscenity)

Players are not allowed to utter vulgar words that are widely known, loudly spoken that can be heard by referees, line referees, and everyone who is watching the match.

5. Visible Obsenity Actions

Players are not allowed to make gestures with fingers or hands, rackets, tennis balls, or other equipment that are widely known to be obscene.

6. Rough treatment of ball/ inappropriate behavior (Abuse of ball)

Players are not allowed to violate or with anger and roughness hit, kick, or throw the ball:

  • Out of the field
  • With danger inside the field
  • Without thinking of the consequences

7. Rough treatment of racket or equipment/inappropriate behavior (Abuse of Racket or Equipment)

Players are not allowed intentionally:

  • Damage the racket or other equipment.
  • Hit the net, field, referee seat, or other equipment during the game in a very angry state.

8. Inappropriate Verbal Abuse

Players are not allowed to utter inappropriate words to opponents, officials, spectators and others. Inappropriate expressions can be categorized as insulting, demeaning or other inappropriate things.

9. Inappropriate Physical Abuse

Players are not allowed to perform inappropriate physical violations such as pushing, punching, hitting opponents or officials and others.

10. Unsportmanlike Conduct

Players are expected to always conduct themselves in a proper or sportsmanlike manner. Examples of unsportmanlike conduct include any behavior that is not appropriate by someone who blatantly violates or harms the values of sports.

Examples:

  • Spitting towards officials
  • Uttering inappropriate words (scolding)
  • Doing things that are not in accordance with the regulations, serving the ball when the receiver is not ready.

PUNISHMENT FOR VIOLATING THE CODE OF ETHICS

Players who violate the code of ethics on the field will receive sanctions from the referees. The form of violation and sanctions are as follows:

1. Extending or delaying playing time

  • First Violation: Warning
  • Second Violation, etc.: Loss of Points (Point Penalty)

2. Code of Ethics Violation (Violations of the code of ethics)

  • First Violation: Warning
  • Second Violation: Loss of Points (Point Penalty)
  • Third Violation: Loss of Game (Game)

However, if there is already a second violation, the referee must call the referee to be on the field. After the third violation, the referee must decide on every subsequent violation when disqualification will be imposed.
